President's Message

It's great to see so many autism awareness activities locally and across the country this month.  More people than ever are advocating for what we want for people with autism and what they want for themselves: understanding, acceptance, and appropriate services and supports to help them realize their potential! This month and every month, the Autism Society of Los Angeles continues our efforts to move this agenda forward in our community for those with autism, across the spectrum and across the lifespan. We invite your continued support and participation to make a difference in the lives of all affected by autism.

Special Olympics Opportunities:

As you all know, I am a complete advocate of Special Olympics activities and programs.  My son has been involved in various programs since age 8 and I could write a book about the benefits to him as an individual (self-esteem, physical activity, teamwork) and to our family.  Anyone who has ever attended a Special Olympics event or volunteered to help in any way has had their heart touched by these wonderful eternal kids.

I am attaching the spring program for the Orange County Special Olympics.  If you have any interest at all, I urge you to sign up immediately.  These programs are space-limited and fill up fast, especially the aquatics groups.

Donna Brandt is also putting together a team of Edison athletes to participate in the annual Mater Dei track meet on April 25th.  This event has been going on forever.  It is not an official S.O. sanctioned event, but attracts teams and individuals from all over the region.  There are a variety of different track and field type events.  The school assigns one of their students as a buddy for each athlete and that person guides them through the events.  We have attended this meet for many years and it is extremely well-run and organized. Lunch is provided for the athletes. We need to provide Mater Dei with a count of the number of "athletes" we will be bringing as soon as possible.  Please call Donna at (714) 313-0922 to sign your student/adult up if you are interested.  There are even events for preschoolers.  There will be fun booths set up with games -- it will be a full day from 8 AM to about 1 PM.  Donna's e-mail address is brandtpeanut@aol.com

These activities are not sponsored by Edison and are not sponsored by SAC Boosters.  However, in the interests of improving the quality of life for our students and families, we will pass the information along to you as we come across anything that might be of interest.

If you have any questions, please give me a call or send me an e-mail.

Call Martha to have her forward a list of teams and programs.

SAC Donations Needed:

The SAC department is in need of a few items and were hoping to get some donations. We are looking for umbrellas for our garden area to provide shade for our students. Our budget is tight and the garden is in need of some spring vegetable pony packs. A Cuisinart food processor would be so helpful to both our cooking class and our garden class as well. A Program Providing Social Interaction for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

What we offer

The New Horizons program offers social interaction for developmentally disabled persons by providing opportunities to make friends while exploring California and surrounding regions.  Members are given the ability to practice their social skills, motor skills, language skills, camping and travel skills, as well as group sharing.

Members can achieve a sense of independence as they explore their community and surrounding areas without the aide of parents or care providers.  They will have the satisfaction of knowing they can learn new skills, make new friends, and care for their own basic needs.

Parents and care providers entrust the YMCA New Horizons program with the safety and well-being of their loved ones every week.  Our staff accompanies members on all outings and provides 24-hour supervision on  overnight activities.

Mission Statement

To add a meaningful dimension to the lives of persons who are developmentally disabled by providing opportunities for socialization and recreation experiences within the community.  Our activities provide an opportunity to increase self-esteem and encourage development of autonomous behavior and self-expression for our members.

Who we serve

The New Horizons program serves individuals with developmental disabilities such as: Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, learning disorders, and autism.  Members must be 15 years of age or older and meet the following eligibility criteria:

·        Ambulatory and able to perform on their own: hygiene, eating and toileting skills

·        Must be medically stable and free of contagious disease

·        Must be willing to take direction from staff

·        Must not be dangerous to him/herself or others

·        Willing to follow all safety rules

The New Horizons program has been partnering with the Regional Center since 1974.  Together we have provided families in Orange County with excellent services.  As a vendor with the Regional Center, respite hours can be applied to all activities offered by our program.  A reservation must be made for all activities, as we are on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Payment for activities varies with each event and information on deposits and payments will be given at time of reservation for the activity.

We strive to provide each and every member with the highest quality of service.  Please contact us for an event calendar and/or to reserve a spot at an upcoming activity.
